The 2006 Honda Civic is destined for success. Its latest major facelift since 2001 is slated to return the Honda Civic to the top of the sport compact market. The newly redesigned Honda Civic is a direct decendent of trickle down technology from the 2003 Honda Accord, although with a youthful styling that is sure to capture Americas up and coming.
The Honda Civic gained popularity in the mid 80's due to its economical pricing, reliability and comfortable styling. Throught each generation the Honda Civic has continually been refined and redesigned with more amenities, size, power and safety features.
In the sport compact and tuning world, the Honda Civic in the mid 90s became and icon of the "Fast and Furious" trend. Honda Civic tuning accessories became abundant and started many trends in the tuning industry.
In 1999, Honda released a sporty souped up version of the Civic dubbed with the "SI" badge. The SI had incorporated an everpopular B16A Vtec engine that produced 170 horsepower, quite an achivement for this small vehicle. The SI was in production for only 2 years until the Civic was redesigned. The 2001 lineup did not include the SI and sport compact tuning enthusiasts were left without the holy grail of the trend.
In 2002, Honda released the SI as a hatchback version. Though sportier than the other versions of the Civic, it failed to live up to the reputation of the 99 Civic SI. For 2006, Honda is scheduled to release a new SI to be unveiled at the 2006 SEMA show in Las Vegas. This new SI is built as a coupe version and from preliminary photos looks to be an absolute winner.
As with all cars, there will be some lag time before tuning and exterior styling accessories will be availible for the 2006 Civic. But with the new design, the Civic will be sure to take charge and move to the front as the premier vehicle in the sport compact community.
