The 2006 Ford Fusion- At last we can see a true competitor from Ford in the sport compact and tuning industry aimed at the Accord, Galant, Civic, Altima, Sentra and more. Picking up where the Ford Focus has left off, the all new 2006 Ford Fusion fills the gap between the smaller Focus and the midsize Taurus, and adds a little spice from the Mustang. Ford's latest offering to the sport compact customer combines elements from different pedigrees of vehicles. Ford Fusion combines the solidity, robustness, practicality and road presence of an SUV and the dynamic, agile qualities of a mid size sedan to create Fords first Urban Activity Vehicle (UAV).

The Ford Fusion is just that,a fusion of the zesty Mazda 6 with the engineering of a new Ford platform. The engineers at Mazda were able to convey feedback from the Mazda 6 that was released a few years back and improved upon. The platform-sharing train usually derails about now with well-intentioned softening and weight hikes. Fortunately, Ford resisted the temptation to squish the suspension and to layer in hundreds of sound-deadening pounds. The Fusion is a fit fighter with no weight gain, tight damping, stout brakes, and interior trim more reminiscent of European sport compacts than thier Japanese and American counterparts.

How does the new Fusion compare with other Japanese sport and midsize vehicles in its class? Stretching the 6's width and wheelbase by 2.1 inches and its length by 3.4 inches spotted the Fusion in the upper half of the mid-size segment, where the Accord, the Nissan Altima, and the Toyota Camry live. Ford raised structural stiffness by 10 percent, increased braking capacity, widened the wheel tracks, and moved the maximum tire size up a notch from 215/50VR-17 to 225/50VR-17. Under the hood, Mazda's spunky 2.3-liter four and Ford's trusty Duratec 3.0-liter V-6 are back for another go. The most notable powertrain upgrade is a new Aisin six-speed automatic that's standard in the V-6 Fusion and some Mazda 6 models.

Get behind the wheel and take a test drive, will discover a nice-driving, comfortable and stylish sedan in the 2006 Ford Fusion. But getting enough people to take that trip requires sweaty work, discipline and restraint. For the only way this car sustains itself and carves a place in the American ideal of a good sedan is through a test of time and equity, built over years spent pricing and marketing a car as a quality vehicle families can count on. To do that means to resist the intoxicating juice of discount marketing; to push away from the temptation of driving down perceived quality by boosting sales via rental fleets. It’s quite commendable to build a good car, stand back and put it out there for everyone to poke and prod; but to convince a skeptical public that, yes sir, the maker of Trucks and SUVs can make a good car with four doors that drives like a dream and gets good gas mileage is darn near a magic trick.
